A compression fitting is a kind of coupling that is used to connect two pipes or a pipe to a fixture or valve. It consists of three parts, i.e., the compression nut, compression ring, and compression seat. A compression fitting is the part of plumbing work that moves along with it.
When it is about for performance of these three components, the process starts when the pipe is slid into the fitting, and the nut is tightened down. Here, as the nut gets tightened, the compression ring is pressed into the seat, that causes it to compress against the pipe and compression nut. This can eventually provide a watertight connection.
As every other component, these compression fittings also have advantages and disadvantages. The primary advantage of the compression fitting is its easy way of assembly. Mostly, the compression fittings are used on stationary connections only. They are designed to inhibit the movement of the pipe outward from the fitting.
Let’s consider the example of its connections with a refrigerator ice-maker. Here, a compression fitting is used to connect tubing to the ice-maker when the refrigerator is pushed back to the wall; this can cause an excess of tubing that usually gets coiled behind the refrigerator. This acts like a spring and expands when the refrigerator is pulled out and compressed when the fridge is pushed back. Even these compression fittings are available as double compression fittings for lengthening pipes.
